Scanning bullshit

Okay... here is a question about scanning finished pages. I have two hp scanners that support 48 bit depth and high resolution but I still can't seem to get a scan of an inked page to look right without effort in photoshop. I mean.. it's black and white.. how hard could that be to scan? It normally turned into dark grey for the blacks and a light blue for the white. Any thoughts? What scanners have worked for you on this??

Thanks,
Bill

How much effort is it taking in Photoshop? So much that you lose information in the image? If you have to tweak levels so much that you're losing lines, something is wrong. But assuming your scanners aren't defective...

It helps to push the contrast levels prior to scanning, in the scanner's adjustment interface, so you don't have to push it quite so far in Photoshop. And a lot can be done with color - if your whites are coming out blue, tweak the contrast levels of the blue alone before tweaking the whole spectrum.

I worked with fancy scanners in school, but I've never heard of scans just coming out right without manual adjustments at one point or the other. You can get a lot closer to what you want by adjusting the image quality prior to scanning. I'm still using a cheap little Epson I bought 7 years ago. It's on its last legs, but when it works at all, it works fine.

      Chris,

Thanks for the feedback. It isn't a lot of work but I do fear losing information playing with the contract, brightness, etc. I guess the biggest issue is attempting to get my pencils scanned... always seemed to loose info in translation. I will play with the scanner interface.. it's just surprising how the scanner attempts to translate the page. Yeah... I've never scanned in art without the need to tweak.. I had hoped for some magic scanner that would make it easier :)

Usually what I do with my b/w scans in Photoshop is play with the levels to get a pretty decent crisp line. If it looks at all grey, I just duplicate the layer and multiply and it darkens and strengthens the line.

I wish there was a majic scanner that was intelligent enough to take some of the work out but at the end of it all, I always end up going back to touch up the artwork.

Good idea on the line.. I will try that. I can see from your art you do a good job of the conversion (until you ink on computer). I had hope that I could find a better scanner but can't afford the expensive epson high-end deals.. oh well, good thing me and photoshop are such buddies...

i usually only scan inked pages, so i'm probably not much help here.

however, i should imagine that you could do a test page - with different squares shaded in differently - and use that to "calibrate" to a standard setting. usually the scanner software has some preference file you can set up or create a default for. that should at least get you closer to the ballpark for each scan.

              Scooter,

Good idea.. I'll give that a shot. I use the hp scanner suite... I believe there is a default that can be set for scanning. I'll look into it. Thanks for the suggestion!! Have a good one.
