<Has anyone else read this book? What did people think?
I haven't read it yet, but the people I know who have seem rather lukewarm about it -- but they all seem to have *wanted* to love it, which is an interesting dynamic.
I like Michelle Tea's writing, and I like the illustrator (her name escapes me), so I'd imagine I'd want to love it, as well.
Any thoughts?>
i thought rent girl was pretty good for what it is although it's not as good as it could have been. the writing is kind of disconnected and antiseptic and the illustrations are sort of erotic and clownish. basically, it doesn't completely get to the heart of the matter as far as sex work is concerned. but it does provide an interesting caricaturish glimpse into some of the people who inhabit that world.
the illustrator's name is lauren mccubin. her illustrations for the book are creepy and weird. kind of like velvet clown paintings.

Re: RENT GIRL
Sun, March 27, 2005 - 11:08 PMi ordered rent girl to the book store where i work (who couldn't carry it regularly b/c it's too pornographic), and was super-psyched about it. i can't say it let me down, in that i'm still glad i bought it.
i guess i wasn't really expecting anything fantastic, just a good ride... which it was: funny and dark, though not the erotic romp that the drawings seem to imply.
overall, i liked it enough to lend it out to a few friends. interesting: the ones who'd already read michelle tea's novels liked it a lot more than those who hadn't.
