Custom comics: Now that's what I'm talkin' about!

Doing custom comic books seems to be the best way to stay in the comic production business as far as I can tell. Because when you give the individual comic book reader what they want, you are virtually guaranteed an audience. If someone tells you what they want in a comic, then all the guesswork is taken out of the usually painful attempt at figuring out what the audience wants. Recently, I was hired to do a custom foot fetish comic book for a rather enthusiastic reader. ("Did you say 'foot fetish comic'?! Holy crap!!" "Whatever!") And I'm getting paid $50 for the deal. If you think that's something, I hear that there may be many more comic fans interested in hiring me to do similar comics. It's a definite decent deal!

Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Doing comics that you enjoy doing and getting paid for doing them. If this thing works out to its fullest, I'm going to make custom comics my main focus in comic book production.

  • What's the point of making comics if you're making them for someone else? I mean if that's your thing then that's all well and good but this is the indie comics tribe.

maybe you should stop worrying about what other people want and what you think other people would like and just worry about making your work as honest as possible, you'll feel alot better at the end of the day whether people like it or not, I mean if people don't like your work at least you like it. Alot of creators (the majority in my opinion) put themselves in a situation where they make crap for comic readers and then if the readers end up not liking it it's a double negative on the creator's side considering they sure as hell don't like the crap they just produced.

I mean it's the comic market, even if super monkey zombie vampire hell spawn future time traveler X! finds that group of readers who eat that cliche crap up it's not like you'll be making good numbers anyway, how many readers would a self published book like that even get? 5000? let's go crazy and say 10,000. It's only a matter of time before those readers move on to the next shiny zombie monkey ninja book (it's not a coincedence Spawn lost all of its readers in a short amount of time).

Make work for the work's sake, that's the stuff that lasts in the long run and that's the stuff that wins awards and inspires creators out there to keep going and push through all the bullshit.

guh... I get preachy sometimes.... sorry if that was too much

    Rock rock on

I second all of that. This "custom comic books" idea is one of the concepts that might sound really clever when you first hear it, but turns out to be completely impractical and unsustainable. And besides, it's a cheat. Look at the artists and creators who've become remarkably popular, and you'll see that the reason that so many people loved them is their ability to express something important in a way that everyone could connect with. Without that, you've got squat.
