Looking for someone interested in making a digital comic

Hey guys,

Some really good artists here and I've been looking into doing some digital comics like this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1d-YsMrFng

Now I don't have the ability to draw...well anything really and I'd love to collaborate with one of you guys. I have several ideas in various stages of execution, the most likely contender right now is a 3 part story of which the first part I made using a machinima tool called "The Movies", you can find my effort here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR14ra_rWFs

I have the script done and the voices recorded and would love to make something like the metal gear video with the other two parts.

I don't know if any cash would come of it, but if it did it would obviously be a 50/50 split. Please contact me at papa.lazarou@gmail.com if you fancy taking a look at what I've got so far with all the ideas I've had, I'd really like to hear from ya

Take it easy guys

Jas

Comic artist wanted for collaboration

Hi there. My band is putting out our third album and we'll be including a comic with the vinyl edition. We have a detailed back-story that includes this album, our last, and our next. The story is science fiction and very bizarre.

We are looking for just the right artist. If you want, you can listen to our last album, if : then :: iminami, here: www.last.fm/music/Voodoo+Economics (If the collaboration works out, we'd love to do another comic that tells the story of that album, which is a doozy.)

This one is a bit more of a professional operation, but you can get a good sense of what we sound like.

We can't afford to pay much and would prefer to work with someone who simply likes the story and wants their work published in a limited run for free.

Thanks for reading!

Decently priced comic printers?

Trying to self publish my work, and looking around online I've found myself severely discouraged... I'm trying to find a non-sleazy, decently priced printer for short runs (maybe 100 at the most) of comics. Black and white interior, maybe a color cover...

It's difficult when they want to charge you $5 for the printing, then the store that carries them is going to want a cut, then my costs. Sheesh.

Any suggestions of people you've worked with or heard good things about?

For Comic Book hopefuls

The following is something I've been asked a few times. I wanted to share this with anyone who is interested but also, feel free to ammend things that you think are needed. This isnt me being an ego maniac and telling people the ONLY way comics should be drawn. Not at all. This is for those folks who desire to learn how to draw comics but dont have the means to go to school, etc. A springboard if you will.

-For those seeking guidance in the drawing and illustration and creation of comic books but can't afford a full time school. A few simple suggestions that don't require tons of money but DOES require a lot of time.

1) DRAW DAILY. Scribble, sketch, doodle; just draw. Do it for ten minutes a day. AT LEAST. Make time for this. Let it grow into more. Comic book artists draw one to two pages a day. A DAY. They have deadlines of a month for (typically) 22 pages. Sometimes the deadlines are longer due to the needs of the inkers, colorists and letterers and editors who have to clean up your mistakes...BUT NOT ALWAYS!!! If a deadline is missed you dont get a poor grade or a slap on the wrist; you eventually get NO MORE WORK.

2) DRAW FROM LIFE. Whenever you can. Sign up for a life drawing course. Most cities have a once a week life drawing class that will cost you no more than 5 bucks for 3 hours of figure drawing. If you can take a community college course with an instructor; DO IT. It's so invaluable. It'll teach you WORLDS. If you can't take a course, drag your ass outside, sit on a bench with your sketch book, pencils and will-to-do and draw people passing by. Don't stress on the details. Get the action down first. Draw the details later.

3) CHECK OUT: "HOW TO DRAW COMICS THE MARVEL WAY". This is a great book that I highly recommend. It'll get your creative juices flowing. It has great art by master artist John Buscema who makes drawing comics look easy. The bastard!!! It has everything you need to know to jump into the field of comics; action poses, drawing real people, acting, perspective, backgrounds, panel layouts, and the tools every comic artist needs to draw a comic page. If you can't find it at Borders or your local bookstore, try the library. Make copies of it there. Take the copies home. Pin 'em to your wall and sleep with 'em under your pillow. ABSORB, ABSORB, ABSORB!!!

Also, if you can get your hands on some copies of Mike Manleys; "DRAW" magazine, you'll be a VERY happy camper. Industry greats litter the pages with knowledge of the field about how they do it and sometimes, how you can do it too. DC comics has put out a number of great books that tackle writing comics, drawing comics, inking comics and coloring and lettering comics. They run about 20 bucks each. Great reads all of them.

4) STUDY THE MASTERS. look at Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Gil Kane and many other great comic artists to see how they set up a shot. Break a comic page down to it's bare essentials. Take page 5 of your favorite comic and write out what happens in each panel. The action, the setting, the characters and what they are saying and HOW they are saying it. Think of comics as acting. Players on a 2-dimensional stage that YOU control. Take that written piece of paper, put the comic AWAY, and draw the page from what you have written (Reference the characters costumes if you need to but do it by looking at a different page they are on. Not the one you just wrote about-this is to excercise YOUR imagination. NOT to COPY what the other guy did). What shot would work best? What would move the story along? What is the best possible way for me to illustrate all this information to the reader in a clear and quick way? Ask yourself these questions while you are drawing. Give yourself a deadline while you are drawing the page also. Be reasonable. Give yourself a full day. You're doing this cuz it's fun, remember? But keep in mind that if you want to draw comics for a living, you're going to have to draw the comic within a given deadline. If you can't work within the deadline, your career is going to be very short indeed. Some artists also ink that same pencilled page in the same day. Think you're up to it? Go for it. Have fun!

FINALLY:
These are some thoughts from one of my teachers at the Joe Kubert School of Illustration and Design that have proven most useful to me.

"Making art is a life. It's NOT a job.""Make Art. Not just pictures.""Think about images and the making of Art all the time."

"DON'T follow a strict formula. Remain open to chance happenings that work. Trust your instincts and abilities but don't let that be an excuse for lousy Art."-(see; "Make Art, not just pictures.")

"Hammer on it but think about what you are doing. Aimless hammering is fruitless. It's your brain more than your hands that do it."

World Premiere of movie based on Cartoonist Jesse Reklaw

Hi,
I have a film making its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival. It's called "Compound Eye" and it centers around an East Bay cartoonist who draws a controversial comic strip depicting the World Trade Center rebuilt as an IHOP with two stacks of pancakes rising high into the sky, and how it affects his roommate who is trying to quietly run a pirate radio station out of his basement. The movie stars Fausto Caceres (from the radio show, Shirley and Spinoza) and Jesse Reklaw (the cartoon, "Slow Wave"), and uses their real lives and weaves them into a fictional story.

Go to www.compoundeyemovie.com for info and a trailer.

The screenings are:
Sunday, Oct. 7 at 5:30pm at the CineArts@Sequoia theater in Mill Valley
Sat. Oct. 13 at 2:45pm at the Rafael Film Center in San Rafael.

Tickets can be purchased at www.mvff.com (search "Compound Eye")
Please support local filmmaking!

Joe Matt Interview In MungBeing

I conducted an interview with Joe Matt for MungBeing 15: Authenticity, which launched today.

http://www.mungbeing.com/issue_15.html?page=26&sub_id=867#867

We discuss the how his art and life are blurred, the problems associated with an autobiographical cartoonist trying to portray himself in an authentic way, and, of course, his addiction to pornography. The article is illustrated with panels from Spent, his latest book collection.

Enjoy.

GOING APE!

GOING APE!

On the evening of Saturday, April 21st is the first annual Going APE! event at the 3 Dollar Bill Café at the LGBT Center at 1800 Market St. in San Francisco. It’s a reading and signing by five of the best, independent, queer comics creators around, all of them well-experienced in working a crowd… These are all personal heroes of mine, and it’s been a thrill to help put this together. The event runs from 7-10pm, with readings beginning at 8pm.

The event is planned to coincide with the Alternative Press Expo (A.P.E.) here in San Francisco, a wonderful, annual, indy comics convention that I'll be tabling at as well.

The line-up of talent for Going APE! is as follows:

Paige Braddock (Jane’s World)
Abby Denson (Tough Love)
Tim Fish (Cavalcade of Boys, YBIL)
Justin Hall (True Travel Tales, Hard To Swallow)
Robert Kirby (Boy Trouble, Curbside)

After the reading, you can also swing by Isotope Comics Lounge’s famous “APE Aftermath” and watch a bunch of cartoonists get raging drunk… It’s only a five-minute, stumbling walk away!

ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO 2007

ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO 2007

Oh, yeah, the time is upon us again. A.P.E. is coming up this weekend, on Saturday, April 21st and Sunday, April 22nd at the Concourse Exhibition Center at 620 7th St. in lovely San Francisco. It’ll be the usual raucous collection of independent creative types…

This is my favorite show of the year, and an amazing display of the vitality of the indy comic/mini-comic/zine scene. Each year the show gets better and better, and it’s been wonderful watching the convention evolve and mature in the 7 or so years I’ve been coming to it. It’s honestly the most inspiring weekend of the year for me, creatively.

I’ll be tabling during the convention of course, sharing a table with Steve MacIsaac and, on Saturday only, Dave Davenport. We’ll be in the gay ghetto overseen by daddy Tim Fish. Come by and say howdy, at table 344 on the ground floor. The new books I'll be showcasing that I've done since last year's APE are Hard To Swallow #2 and the Swallowing a Cobra and Other True Travel Tales mini-comic.

QUEER CARTOONISTS PANEL

I’ll also be moderating the Queer Cartoonists Panel for the fourth year now, on Sunday, April 22nd from 4:45-5:45pm in the APE conference area. Please come by! It’s a pretty stellar line-up of LGBT creators... Here's the APE program blurb for it:

For the fourth installment of this annual, popular panel, yet another gaggle of LGBT cartoonists gather to gab irreverently about weighty issues. Should artists be socially responsible? What's happening in the world of queer cartooning? And just how gay are comics anyway?

Abby Denson (Tough Love)
Robert Kirby (Boy Trouble, Curbside)
Andy Hartzell (Monday, Fox Bunny Funny)
Brad Rader (Harry and Dickless Tom)
Leia Weathington (Bold Riley)

Moderated by Justin Hall (True Travel Tales, Hard To Swallow)

We are looking for several graphic artists and writers to join us in collaborating comic strip projects that we are launching soon. We wish to create several series and publish them on our website come4play.com.

In our universe, our heroes and heroines fight for all persuasions, Gay, Straight, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, and Transgender. Therefore, we obviously want our heroes and or heroines to also represent the diversity of human sexuality.

Since the site is age restricted, contributing graphic artists and writers will have almost complete artistic freedom to express this hot and sexy battle between good and evil.

Writers and graphic artists should be prepared with a pilot strip. Your Pilot Strip submission should come complete a title for your series, synopsis of the character, complete with description(s) that include details about who they are as a super hero and how they live in their secret identity, as well as what cause(s) they fight for and whom the fight against.
Stay tuned for more information and details regarding these projects.
BIPOLAR

I just went into a comic shop today that doesn't specialize in carrying indies. Behind the new release stacks, I found two indies that time must have forgot (the publ. date were May '05 and Nov. '04 respectively -- and I found them in the NEW RELEASES section).

The first one was "Bug Girl" - it was a quick, interesting story about the evils we may commit in order to be accepted --> but I may or may not try to track down others (if they even published any issues after #1).

The second was "Bipolar" #5 (2nd printing - I'm not a collector anymore, just a reader, so finding first printings isn't even a priority anymore). The first vignettes weren't that great - but the final vignette had me stoked (it was a cliffhanger, so I am eager to find out how the story ends). I found out that at least a portion of the "Bipolar" series is reprinted in a TPB called "The Placebo Man." I also discovered that "Bipolar" was the winner of the Eisner award, Harvey award and a shit-load of other awards.

You never know what surprises may be lurking in the back row of the new releases section.

What Size Font on Originals?

A "new to self-publishing" question: On a standard 10"X15" original, what size do you make your fonts for comfortable reading when reduced to comic format?
Thanks in advance!

blue pencil? ink? (art question)

just wondering if any of you use blue pencil (non-repro blue) and how that works with scanners, etc? i've been using regular mechanical pencil and erasing, but i'm getting tired of that.

also, i just finished a bottle of Black Magic ink and it aint what it used to be. it used to be "India Ink" and now its "waterproof". It used to be really opaque, and have a shine to it. Now its kinda watery and my papers soak it up. True India ink has a shellac base, hence the shine (and that's why its waterproof). Anyway, what are you all using (those of you who use pens or brush, rather than marker)?

Estrus 4 Release Party

For you bay area folks:

I'm having a release party next Sunday, June 11, for my self-published comics, Estrus (4). You can see some examples on my website: http://marinaomi.com/comics.html

In addition to the release, this will also be sort of a goodbye to my art studio. My lease runs out at the end of the month and I won’t be renewing, so I'm opening up the space and am having a sale to minimize the clutter that will arise when I move all this stuff into my 1-bedroom apartment. So, for one day only, I'm having a 10% off sale on all my original paintings. For a sneak preview of what will be available, check out my website at http://marinaomi.com/paintings.html

Details:

Estrus 4 Release Party and Open Studios
1313 Mason St. at Jackson, San Francisco
Sunday, June 11
1 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Cheers,
Mari

Looking for a Talented Inker

I'm nearly done inking the first issue of my comic, which is going to either be published by one of two major publishers, or self published. I've decided that while I love inking for fine art, I definitely don't like doing it for sequential art. So, as a result, I'm now on the hunt for a very talented inker to take up the brush and quill (or sharpie, whatever) and do a bang-up job over my pencils. Any suggestions or takers?

I just got this offer from a major publisher, and I wanted to know what everyone thinks. This particular publisher is VERY well known, and distributes both domestic and internationally, for both U.S. and European artists.

"On our end we pay 10% royalty off retail on an advance of about half of 1st print run which is normally about 4000 on a retail price around $10. We might also be able to pre-serialize at $40 a page."

Being that I've never had a publishing deal before, I wanted to know the thoughts of my fellow artists. Thanks everyone!

Al's Comics SF Saved! Reopens Feb. 8

Wow.

The whole community came out to support Al in various ways, and he's now secured the old Victorian store front at 1803 Market St @ Octavia Blvd. That's the old Limelight Bookstore. Al says that only one family has owned the building, so they're all SF natives (Al was a kid on the Haight in the 1960s) and it was built in 1906.

He's gonna be closed at his Guerrero shop for a few days while he moves over, but plans on being open this Sat. The new store opens Feb. 8th

Phone and em are the same thought ATT/SBC won't get the phone up until later next week.

Al's endebted to his friends and community. He's really appreciated all the support.

Stop by and check out the new place. New things coming down the pike too, b/c Al has more space to grow.

See you there next week.

Hey,

I posted the link to my site right when it started out (about 3 months ago) and got some great support from everyone here at tribe. The site has a bit more content than before with two of the three comics on 22 pages/strips of work and the other on 12 strips. If you've never been it's worth checking out and if you checked it out when it came out and haven't been since it's definitely worth taking another gander at.

It's finally here. AIDS Project Los Angeles printed it and you can download (Adobe Acrobat) versions of each story. Check it out! I'd love to hear what you all think.

It's a great book and I'm pleased as punch to be part of something important, entertaining and to be in the company of other great and established cartoonists and artists. If you are going to request your own copy, I'd do so now.

I don't know if there are any Cerebus fans here, but there is a magazine called Following Cerebus which covers two things-Dave Sim and the art and craft of comics. A recent issue, #5, includes a discussion between Dave Sim and each of the artists mentioned above, about outside editorial opinions and whether each artist is for or against it. What comes of this are some revealing insights into the creative process of each artist.

No matter what you think about Dave Sim the man, you have to give him credit as a master comic book artist and innovator. He knows what he is talking about and is well respected among the interviewees.

The latest Optic Nerve is on the stands. It's part II of what was called "White On Rice", but is not now, because of copyright conflicts. The writing is savager and funnier then ever. The drawing style is sparse, but with plenty of subtlety and expression when describing the characters body and facial language. My only complaint is that it took too long to get here and not nearly long enough to finish. I breezed through it in under 10 minutes.

Save Al's Comics (SF, CA)

Al is a HUGE supporter of indie comics. For almost 20 years, his Mission District shop has had a large collection of self- and small-published books. I just photographed a 1974-ish underground comic that he plans on selling on Ebay. Spain, Crumb, Mouse, and even Rick Griffin are in that one.

Donate or help Al find a new shop in the Mission:
http://savealscomics.com/

Blog posting:
When I moved to San Francisco in 1997, one of the top priorities of my transition was to find a local comic store to patronize. This may humor those of you who do not collect or read graphic novels (comics), but I liken it to the drinker who finds a local bar to call home. I have read, collected, and bought comics for most of my life, and at the time read several titles that had 10 to 30 year story lines (Cerebus and Bone). Finding a local store, setting up a subscription bag, and bugging the owner provides me with quality living through culture and community.

Go to my blog for the whole message

SNAP! The Comic Arts Festival

I usually don't go to comic conventions because of the lack-luster response I usually get from comic convention patrons. But this time, I'm going to go to the SNAP! convention this October because it's being sponsored by my favorite comic book shop. As such, I feel compelled to support them in this effort. SNAP! might turn out to be another disappointment for me, but at least it'll be a disppontment from a brand new comic con.

Anyway, for details on SNAP!, go to: http://www.greenbrain.biz/SNAP!.htm

Who would be interested?

As most of you know, I started a comic book company in February 2005, and had 14 people come to my site. Now I have a regular traffic flow of 40,000+, which grows every month. Two weeks ago, I had to change hosting companies and purchase 25 times the bandwidth I had before.

I get letters asking what I did to get to this point, and I'm burning out from replying. I get letters from comic book people, real estate people, homemakers and shop keepers, asking how to improve the flow of people to their sites and make more money.

I am going to make an eBook, to sell from my site (most likely for $24-29), and wanted to give those of you here and a few other tribes the heads up on it. It will detail what I did, in what order, the exact sources/programs/tools I use, etc. Basically I want to create a detailed step-by-step map as to how I got to this point.

Though it is referring to comics, this can be applied to MOST online businesses, simply because it involves correct principles across the board.

I would like to know, by a show of posts, who would be interested in that resource?

If anyone is interested in a good read, I create WANTED:HERO, a comic about Wendell P. Dipmier, an VERY average guy who gets forced into a situation he just can't get out of. I put it on the web for download every other month, 36 pages.

Issue #1 is always FREE. A price every Triber could love. Issues after that cost less than a 24oz. Pepsi from a vending machine.

Eight pages. Black and White.
RUIN is available online at the Chicago store Quimby's (Quimbys.com) and by request from the creator.
A nasty article of terminal psychological deterioration and misanthropic regression. It features words, photographs, hallucinations, and paintings violently spliced together.

It's an awful thing that came from my head.
Custom comics: Now that's what I'm talkin' about!

Doing custom comic books seems to be the best way to stay in the comic production business as far as I can tell. Because when you give the individual comic book reader what they want, you are virtually guaranteed an audience. If someone tells you what they want in a comic, then all the guesswork is taken out of the usually painful attempt at figuring out what the audience wants. Recently, I was hired to do a custom foot fetish comic book for a rather enthusiastic reader. ("Did you say 'foot fetish comic'?! Holy crap!!" "Whatever!") And I'm getting paid $50 for the deal. If you think that's something, I hear that there may be many more comic fans interested in hiring me to do similar comics. It's a definite decent deal!

Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Doing comics that you enjoy doing and getting paid for doing them. If this thing works out to its fullest, I'm going to make custom comics my main focus in comic book production.

Here we are introduced to Jackie, a famous thief. Being a norm in this world, people are in all of her ability to steal from right under the nose of others. Now she has stolen something that is more dangerous that she could ever know, a Gem with mysteries dating back to medieval times, and the Godz are in hot pursuit to collect the bounty and bring the Seed back!

I may or may not be leaving for Paris for 10 days on Thursday, thank to a freelance job. I wanted to ask folks while there, what should I look out for? Obviously I’m hitting the Louvre and various museums and hot spots, but aside from that, what books and/or comic spots can I go see? Are there locales I should keep in mind?

Hi all -

I have my strip online now: www.paperdollie.com. There are still a few missing links, etc. But it's getting there. It's not high art and it's very sick humor. Hope you like it. :)
Like I'm always saying, there's a population of 6 billion. And out of an inconceivably high number like that, there should be at least a few thousand people who have the mentality to appreciate the kind of comics I do. Unfortunately, I can't find those few thousand people. Can anyone help me find them?

Back in the fall of 2003, my Zine Solar System zine was on a monthly schedule and reviewed zines on that basis. Despite that very productive edition to the zine scene, almost no zine readers or publishers were interested in subscribing to ZSS. I totally don't get it! Am I to believe that most zine readers and publishers want review zines to be published infrequently with outdated information?!? If that's the case, that would explain why Zine World is so successful. But if it's good to have a review zine published once or twice a year with reviews of zines more than a year old, then can somebody explain to me why that's a good thing? And if that is a good thing, then also explain to me how I can benefit from that.

How do you successfully promote comics that have a very unpopular theme without making any changes to such comics? I know there's a good chance that this question can't be adequately answered, but I still think the question is worth asking.

Hello All.

I'm a writer looking to put together a few (one or more) self-published books as a way of working into the industry. I need an illustrator (at least one - maybe more) to work with. I have a few things ready but I am more than willing to work out something new.

Feel free to reply here or drop me a line at fictionsetter@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

One of the biggest problems with zinedom is OUTDATED INFORMATION. I understand that many zinesters are constantly on the move. But I'm too poor to afford wasting postage writing to a zinester who changed his or her address all of a sudden. Now here's my stupid question of the moment: How do you adequately determine if a zine address you've found is current?

My first 24-hour comic (Mia unua dudek kvar-hora-bildgazeto)

I finally got around to printing up copies of my first 24-hour comic. It's called "Gen X Slap Happy Life" ("Geneksa Felic^ega Viv'") and it's written in both English and Esperanto, the international language that combines elements from a number of other languages including English. The theme of the comic deals with what my life might be like if it were perfect. And as an added bit of uniqueness, I also drew most of the comic left-handed even though I'm right-handed. It's an idea I got from my therapist.

Anyway, to get a copy of this comic book, send $2 cash or postal money order to: Slap Happy, P.O. Box 02222, Detroit, MI 48202-9998. It can work for you (I guess).

Call for Submissions for Alternative Comics Anthology

PODpublishing, a New York City-based publisher of fine art prints -- representing many of the world's best-known mainstream and alternative comic book artists, including Neal Adams, Will Eisner, the Brothers Hildebrandt, Jeffrey Jones, Dan Brereton, Al Feldstein, Jim Woodring, Jessica Abel, Peter Bagge and many others -- is producing an anthology of new comics and art, tentatively entitled Blurred Vision.

Blurred Vision will be magazine sized, 96 black and white pages with a full color cover and "perfect bound." The initial print run will be 1000 copies, with additional printings as sales dictate. Distribution will be through comic book stores, bookstores, and the PODcomix.com website.

For Blurred Vision, PODpublishing is seeking experimental, alternative and/or underground work by both emerging and established artists operating at the intersection of art and comics. Submissions may be anywhere from one page to twenty-one pages in length, and should not have been previously published (with the exception of self-publishing, which is fine).

Submissions may be made via email, as screen resolution JPEG files (no more than 600 x 800 pixels per page), via an emailed link to an existing website where the work is displayed, or via photocopied submissions. Please include an SASE for any materials you wish to have returned. If you submit via snail mail, please include an email address, as receipt notification will be sent electronically. The submission deadline for the first issue of Blurred Vision is July 15, 2005. Submissions received after that date will be considered for future issues. If your work is chosen to print, you will be notified by July 25, 2005.

Send Submissions to:

email: mail@podgallery.com

snail mail:

Peter Bagge's newest is out. I wasn't all that happy with the art or the beginning of the story, until a face from the past popped up. I won't tell you who it is, but the character arc is similar to Butch's transformation from Neat Stuff to Hate. All of a sudden, I couldn't put it down. Of course it's a cliff hanger ending, so I'll have to wait another year to find out what happens next.

The annual also has tons of mediocre filler.

If "Get Your Ass to Mars" were real, the Mars ship would be under construction in orbit nearly 95 percent complete, and the crew would be coming close to the end of their training. But since that's not really happening, there's now the "GYATM" web comic. Go to: http://www.100megsfree4.com/outorb/GYATMcovers/gyatm_covers.htm

I am seeking an artist for a full-length inked and painted independent comic book. Artist must have capability with both illustrative and highly abstracted images, as story is set in realistic and metaphysical locations.

I have page & panel scripts, ugly storyboards :) and extensive character/setting notes. Plots discuss highly mature themes, and artist needs to be very comfortable with what some might call 'risque' topics.

I would like finished look to be watercolor-like on inked pages, artist or myself may supply coloring.

Sound interesting? Please contact me with links to both illustrative and stylized art. Thanks!

Scanning bullshit

Okay... here is a question about scanning finished pages. I have two hp scanners that support 48 bit depth and high resolution but I still can't seem to get a scan of an inked page to look right without effort in photoshop. I mean.. it's black and white.. how hard could that be to scan? It normally turned into dark grey for the blacks and a light blue for the white. Any thoughts? What scanners have worked for you on this??

Thanks,
Bill

the importance of Paper

i was getting frustrated in my inking (see my other post about blue pencils). turns out that _part_ of my problem was the paper. I switched from some "comics paper" (made by Deleter) back to Brisol (2 ply smooth) and YES! my work immediately looked better. same tools (brush and pen with ink) but much better results.

I think the Deleter paper was made for markers or something. Markers look great on it. but the ink just soaked into it while at the same time erasing easily off it. not sure how that's possible, but it did.

RENT GIRL

<Has anyone else read this book? What did people think?

I haven't read it yet, but the people I know who have seem rather lukewarm about it -- but they all seem to have *wanted* to love it, which is an interesting dynamic.

I like Michelle Tea's writing, and I like the illustrator (her name escapes me), so I'd imagine I'd want to love it, as well.

Any thoughts?>

i thought rent girl was pretty good for what it is although it's not as good as it could have been. the writing is kind of disconnected and antiseptic and the illustrations are sort of erotic and clownish. basically, it doesn't completely get to the heart of the matter as far as sex work is concerned. but it does provide an interesting caricaturish glimpse into some of the people who inhabit that world.

the illustrator's name is lauren mccubin. her illustrations for the book are creepy and weird. kind of like velvet clown paintings.

or a lot? Do you like Ivan Brunetti's evil? I used to be way into this guy- Schizo #1 and #2 era- and then I kinda forgot about my former obsession. But comics tribes re-ignited the old flame. If you have any interest in this sick, sick man, visit my new tribe called, unsurprisingly, SchizoLovers.

It'd be nice to know that there are other Schizoid folks so I won't feel like the only fan of this work- this work that is really, really WRONG. I can't help myself though; it's funny sh*t.

Hey. In addition to being a huge graphic novel fan myself, I have a friend who loves them, and has a birthday coming up. What can you reccomend for a good one to give as a present? She adores Craig Thompson, Dave McKean, Neil Gaiman, Little Nemo, that sort of thing. What can you reccomend?

JOKESTER Magazine

Greetings!!! JOKESTER Magazine is in this month's PREVIEWS as well as this weeks Comic Shop News. And although it won't be in comic shops until MAY it's been getting some great reviews already

Here is a sampling of what people are saying about JOKESTER
____________________________________________________

"I sat down and read it from cover to cover last night, and all I can say is: It Totally Rocks!"

"Jokester #1 just arrived. I read it cover to cover and let me tell you (as if you needed to know) it's starts with 'F' and ends with 'unny', FUNNY!"

"I laughed out loud at the menu selections at NRAFridays!"

"I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed JOKESTER now that it has finally arrived. Definitely worth the money Keep up the great work."

"They look great... Very professional."

"I really liked the variety of different styles and brands of humor."

" This magazine is hilarious, filled with a variety of cartoon types. Incredibly put together and it ’s thick and rich with humor! It’s worth every penny! You will laugh so hard, you will get a nosebleed!"

"If you are fond of humor magazines like MAD and CRACKED then this is something you'll really like. "

"What I like the most is that the concentration here is more on cartooning and natural humor than on parody or satire on recent celebrities or media events. "

"What are really good are the one page gags, and there is a lot of variety in them. There are also a fair number of one panel gags."

"All of it is very good."

"There is a mix of over two dozen contributors to this magazine making each page something with a different perspective. "

"There are plenty of things to make you laugh or chuckle or just grin in agreement."

"It is a very worthy effort and a great first issue."
